Application Process and Selection Procedures
Thank you for your interest in seeking employment as a substitute teacher with the Madison Metropolitan School District. Substitute teachers are a critical part of our District's education program, and the position requires great responsibility for our students. Our hiring process is quite rigorous. It can take as long as four weeks to approve a candidate for hire, depending on the volume of applications at the time you apply. If you are applying as a certified substitute teacher, please submit the following:
- Substitute Teacher Application
- Official transcripts (photocopy acceptable)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Cover letter and resume (optional)
After we receive your completed application and corresponding materials, Human Resources will take the following steps:
- We will check your references. This can take up to two or three weeks, depending on our volume of applications, and how easily we can contact your references. Please fill out the Student Teaching Experience, Teaching Experience, and Other Work History sections of the application completely and accurately. Be sure that your resume is current and includes telephone numbers of people we can contact. We will not make a hiring decision until we have successfully contacted at least two of your references.
- If you are under final consideration for hire, you will receive a New Hire Packet with forms that must be completed before you may begin working. These forms include:
- New Employee Information Card
- State (W-4) and federal (W-T4) tax forms
- Verification of Employment Eligibility (I-9)
- Candidate Disclosure Statement (so the District can conduct a criminal records check)
- Authorization to have a TB test administered by one of our staff nurses
- After you pass the final stages of the selection process and all the above documentation is received, along with a copy of your Wisconsin teaching license, you will be able to begin working.
- It is required that you attend a District orientation session within the first 30 days of your employment.
If you have any questions throughout the hiring process, please contact Louise Fosdick at 663-1695.
